This article features translated passages from Mark Twain's Chapters from my Autobiography which was first published in the North American Review. The English translation below is partly based on the original text. On February 16, 1907, an almost identical version of this item appeared in a newspaper published in the small town of Eibenstock in the western Ore Mountains, located approximately 80 miles southwest of Dresden.

In seiner Biographie, die gegenwärtig in der „North American Review“ veröffentlicht wird, erzählt Mark Twain eine merkwürdige Geschichte von seinem ersten und einzigen Zusammentreffen mit Kaiser Wilhelm den Zweiten; da man bei uns von einem solchen Zusammentreffen bisher nichts gewußt hat, dürfte es sich auch hier vielleicht um einen der bekannten „Scherze“ des amerikanischen Humoristen handeln. Als Scherz wäre die Geschichte zwar recht plump, aber nach erzählt soll sie doch werden. Mark Twain beginnt mit der bekannten Anekdote von jenem Ehemann, dem ein Freund einmal wegen seines Verhaltens in der Ehe heftige Vorwürfe machte: „Es ist eine Schandel“ sagte der Freund. „Vierzehn Tage lang hast Du zu Deiner Frau kein Wort gesprochen. Was kannst Du zu Deiner Entschuldigung anführen?“ - „Ich wollte sie nicht unterbrechen“, erwiderte der Ehemann geknickt. As a joke, the story would be rather clumsy, but it should be retold nonetheless. Mark Twain begins with the well-known anecdote of the husband who was once strongly reproached by a friend for his behavior in marriage: “It's a shame” said the friend. “For fourteen days you have not spoken a word to your wife. What can you give as your excuse?” - “I did not mean to interrupt her”, replied the husband dejectedly. Mark Twain now goes on to tell how, on his arrival in Berlin, he received an invitation to dinner from the emperor, an invitation that felt like an order. He went anyway and found that the emperor resembled him in two things: he spoke very correct English and he was used to conduct the conversation at the table alone. The emperor spoke continuously and almost never allowed himself to be interrupted; only now and then he addressed a question to one of his dinner guests, and the guest would hurry to answer respectfully. When he had disposed of his answer, he would look like a man who had a load lifted off his mind. Mark Twain openly declared that he, too, found no pleasure in sitting still for long periods of time, and that he therefore had to grant the emperor the right to speak freely in his own house, but if the emperor should ever come to America and accept an invitation to dinner from him, he would let him play the same silent role at the table that he - Mark Twain - had had to play in Berlin. What surprised him most was that on his return to America he found a letter in which the emperor asked him why he had spoken so little at the table. “My God!” exclaimed Mark Twain with comic amazement, “if “He” is always speaking alone...!”

Mark Twain hatte im Arizona Kicker-Stil den Redakteur des Konkurrenzblattes, einen gewissen Laird, von der Virginia „Union“, scharf angegriffen. Dessen Erwiderung war so herausfordernd, daß Mark Twain den „Kollegen der anderen Fakultät“ durch Stave Giltis, einen Freund, zum Duell auffordern ließ. Am nächsten Morgen begab er sich mit seinem Sekundanten, einem vorzüglichen Pistolenschützen, in aller Frühe nach einer kleinen Bergschlucht in der Nähe der Stadt, um sich im Schießen zu üben. Sie mußten meine Schüsse hören und würden wohl bald über den Abhang herüber kommen, um meine Fortschritte zu bewundern und sich durch den Augenschein zu überzeugen, wie mein Rekord stände. Nun, ich hatte keinen Rekord und wußte, wenn Laird herüberkäme und meine Stallthür so schön unversehrt sähe, daß er ebenso kampfwüthig sein würde, wie ich es war, oder hm. wenigstens um Mitternacht gewesen war, bevor er meine kühne Herausforderung angenommen. Sie empfahlen sich. Der Sekundant nahm Laird, dessen Knie etwas schlotterten, unterm Arm, und am nächsten Morgen empfing ich von meinem Gegner ein Schreiben des Inhalts, daß er unter keinerlei Bedingung sich auf ein Duell mit mir einlasse. Mein Leben war also gerettet, und zwar durch den kleinen Zwischenfall. Später erfuhren wir, daß Laird auf seinem Schießstande viermal auf sechs getroffen hatte. Wenn das Duell nun wirklich zustande gekommen wäre, so hätte er sicherlich meinen Leib so durchlöchert, daß selbst meine Prinzipien keinen Platz mehr darin gefunden hätten.	{In his autobiography in the “North American Review”, the well-known humorist Mark Twain tells the following cute story about how he was saved from a duel. They prepared the door of a stable and placed a wooden fence in front of it to represent the enemy.} “I began on the rail.” “I couldn't hit the rail; then I tried the barn door; but I couldn't hit the barn door. There was nobody in danger except stragglers around on the flanks of that mark. I was thoroughly discouraged, and I didn't cheer up any when we presently heard pistol-shots over in the next little ravine. I knew what that was—that was Laird's gang out practising him. They would hear my shots, and of course they would come up over the ridge to see what kind of a record I was making—see what their chances were against me. Well, I hadn't any record; and I knew that if Laird came over that ridge and saw my barn door without a scratch on it, he would be as anxious to fight as I was—or as I had been at midnight, before that disastrous acceptance came. Now just at this moment, a little bird, no bigger than a sparrow, flew along by and lit on a sage-bush about thirty yards away. Steve whipped out his revolver and shot its head off. Oh, he was a marksman—much better than I was. We ran down there to pick up the bird, and just then, sure enough, Mr. Laird and his people came over the ridge, and they joined us. And when Laird's second saw that bird, with its head shot off, he lost color, he faded, and you could see that he was interested. He said: “Who did that?” Before I could answer, Steve spoke up and said quite calmly, and in a matter-of-fact way, “Clemens did it.” The second said, “Why, that is wonderful. How far off was that bird?” Steve said, “Oh, not far—about thirty yards.” The second said, “Well, that is astonishing shooting. How often can he do that?” Steve said languidly, “Oh, about four times out of five.” I knew the little rascal was lying, but I didn't say anything. The second said, “Why, that is amazing shooting; I supposed he couldn't hit a church.” He was supposing very sagaciously, but I didn't say anything. Well, they said good morning. The second took Mr. Laird home, a little tottery on his legs, and Laird sent back a note in his own hand declining to fight a duel with me on any terms whatever. Well, my life was saved—saved by that accident. <I don't know what the bird thought about that interposition of Providence, but I felt very, very comfortable over it—satisfied and content.> Now, we found out, later, that Laird had hit his mark four times out of six, right along. If the duel had come off, he would have so filled my skin with bullet-holes that it wouldn't have held my principles.

It was 1864, and Mark Twain was local editor of the newspaper “Entreprise” in Virginia City, Nevada. At that time, the duelling rage was rampant there. Mark Twain had - in Arizona Kicker style - sharply attacked the editor of a competing paper, a certain Laird, of the Virginia “Union”. The latter's retort was so challenging that Mark Twain had the “colleague of the other faculty” challenged to a duel by Stave Giltis [Steve Gillis], a friend. Early the next morning, he and his second, an excellent pistol marksman, went to a small glen near town to practice shooting. They prepared the door of a stable and placed a wooden fence in front of it to represent the enemy.} “I began on the rail.” “I couldn't hit the rail; then I tried the barn door; but I couldn't hit the barn door. There was nobody in danger except stragglers around on the flanks of that mark. I was thoroughly discouraged, and I didn't cheer up any when we presently heard pistol-shots over in the next little ravine. I knew what that was—that was Laird's gang out practising him. They would hear my shots, and of course they would come up over the ridge to see what kind of a record I was making—see what their chances were against me. Well, I hadn't any record; and I knew that if Laird came over that ridge and saw my barn door without a scratch on it, he would be as anxious to fight as I was—or as I had been at midnight, before that disastrous acceptance came. Now just at this moment, a little bird, no bigger than a sparrow, flew along by and lit on a sage-bush about thirty yards away. Steve whipped out his revolver and shot its head off. Oh, he was a marksman—much better than I was. We ran down there to pick up the bird, and just then, sure enough, Mr. Laird and his people came over the ridge, and they joined us. And when Laird's second saw that bird, with its head shot off, he lost color, he faded, and you could see that he was interested. He said: “Who did that?” Before I could answer, Steve spoke up and said quite calmly, and in a matter-of-fact way, “Clemens did it.” The second said, “Why, that is wonderful. How far off was that bird?” Steve said, “Oh, not far—about thirty yards.” The second said, “Well, that is astonishing shooting. How often can he do that?” Steve said languidly, “Oh, about four times out of five.” I knew the little rascal was lying, but I didn't say anything. The second said, “Why, that is amazing shooting; I supposed he couldn't hit a church.” He was supposing very sagaciously, but I didn't say anything. Well, they said good morning. The second took Mr. Laird home, a little tottery on his legs, and Laird sent back a note in his own hand declining to fight a duel with me on any terms whatever. In seiner Selbstbiographie in der „North American Review“ erzählt der bekannte Humorist Mark Twain folgende niedliche Geschichte, wie er vor einem Duell bewahrt wurde. Es war 1864, und Mark Twain war Lokalredakteur der Zeitung „Entreprise“ in Virginia City, Nevada. Dort grassirte damals die Duellwuth. Mark Twain hatte im Arizona Kicker-Stil den Redakteur des Konkurrenzblattes, einen gewissen Laird, von der Virginia „Union“, scharf angegriffen. Dessen Erwiderung war so herausfordernd, daß Mark Twain den „Kollegen der anderen Fakultät“ durch Stave Giltis, einen Freund, zum Duell auffordern ließ. {Mark Twain's duel}

{In his autobiography in the “North American Review”, the well-known humorist Mark Twain tells the following cute story about how he was saved from a duel. It was 1864, and Mark Twain was local editor of the newspaper “Entreprise” in Virginia City, Nevada. At that time, the duelling rage was rampant there. Mark Twain had - in Arizona Kicker style - sharply attacked the editor of a competing paper, a certain Laird, of the Virginia “Union”. The latter's retort was so challenging that Mark Twain had the “colleague of the other faculty” challenged to a duel by Stave Giltis (Steve Gillis), a friend. Early the next morning, he and his second, an excellent pistol marksman, went to a small glen near town to practice shooting. They prepared the door of a stable and placed a wooden fence in front of it to represent the enemy.} “I began on the rail.” “I couldn't hit the rail; then I tried the barn door; but I couldn't hit the barn door. There was nobody in danger except stragglers around on the flanks of that mark. I was thoroughly discouraged, and I didn't cheer up any when we presently heard pistol-shots over in the next little ravine. I knew what that was—that was Laird's gang out practising him. They would hear my shots, and of course they would come up over the ridge to see what kind of a record I was making—see what their chances were against me. Well, I hadn't any record; and I knew that if Laird came over that ridge and saw my barn door without a scratch on it, he would be as anxious to fight as I was—or as I had been at midnight, before that disastrous acceptance came. Now just at this moment, a little bird, no bigger than a sparrow, flew along by and lit on a sage-bush about thirty yards away. Steve whipped out his revolver and shot its head off. Oh, he was a marksman—much better than I was. We ran down there to pick up the bird, and just then, sure enough, Mr. Laird and his people came over the ridge, and they joined us. And when Laird's second saw that bird, with its head shot off, he lost color, he faded, and you could see that he was interested. He said: “Who did that?” Before I could answer, Steve spoke up and said quite calmly, and in a matter-of-fact way, “Clemens did it.” The second said, “Why, that is wonderful. How far off was that bird?” Steve said, “Oh, not far—about thirty yards.” The second said, “Well, that is astonishing shooting. How often can he do that?” Steve said languidly, “Oh, about four times out of five.” I knew the little rascal was lying, but I didn't say anything. The second said, “Why, that is amazing shooting; I supposed he couldn't hit a church.” He was supposing very sagaciously, but I didn't say anything. Well, they said good morning. The second took Mr. Laird home, a little tottery on his legs, and Laird sent back a note in his own hand declining to fight a duel with me on any terms whatever. Wilhelm II. (German Emperor) Friedrich Wilhelm Viktor Albert of Prussia (27th January 1859 – 4th June 1941) was the last German Emperor. His name is frequently anglicised as "William II."
During Mark Twain's stay in Berlin, he was invited to dine with the emperor and he would recount the occasion in his Chapters from my Autobiography as well as in various interviews (Scharnhorst, 2006).
