Program Goal J

It is necessary for all information professionals to be able to manage and lead teams and projects that are diverse as diversity brings dimensional perspective and varied skill sets, which is fundamental to achieve goals successfully. It is necessary to assume authentic leadership, and be able to communicate effectively at all levels. Throughout the Master of Management in Library and Information (MMLIS) program there has been a strong emphasis on effective leadership and communication, and methods to develop necessary skills in this regard. As a result, I have had an opportunity to demonstrate project management and team leadership skills resulting in successful team interactions, group projects, and individual assignments in most courses. In addition, through this process I have learned how to become an effective and authentic leader and to continually develop these skills through personal growth.

Zine Collection Development Team Presentation

In LIM 502: Collection Development and Management, I successfully lead our team through the development of a zine collection in an academic library, culminating in a final presentation highlighting different skills and contributions of all team members. Throughout this process I communicated effectively, obtaining feedback on project deadlines, and provided opportunity for equal contributions from all team members. During the process, I managed collaborative decision making, encouraging positive interactions based on a strategy to reach a collective goal of successfully submitting the project and presentation.

Independent Research Project Management Plan

LIM 593: Independent Research in Library and Information Management required a detailed project plan at the beginning of the course to remain accountable for the duration of the semester. My skills in project management were highlighted in this comprehensive project management plan. This plan helped me to provide background for the research project, determine the scope of the project, and develop a clear strategy for how I was going to approach the research. In addition, I identified driving forces, restraining forces, and critical success factors. Furthermore, I developed a realistic budget and clearly identified stakeholders, and stakeholder responsibilities, all essential project management and leadership skills.

Team Pitch Presentation

In LIM 536: Library Project Management, it was necessary to propose a project for selection to our team based on relevant, and then pitch our idea to our team for approval. This required project management skills, as well as effective communication skills. To market my proposal effectively, I presented the topic in an enthusiastic, professional, and authentic way, indicative of an effective leader.

Conclusion

It is necessary for information professionals in leadership to be able to communicate effectively in different ways to diverse teams to successfully enhance information services in their communities. During the Master of Management in Library and Information Science (MMLIS) program, I developed confidence and skills in effective management and leadership, continually learning and improving, as illustrated with the assignments discussed. These skills will be fundamental to me as I enter a Library and Information Science (LIS) career, as I will be able to effectively lead and positively influence my colleagues from whatever position I am in.
