Ghost Metropolis: Los Angeles from Clovis to Nixon

The Tonight Show, 1954-Present

The Tonight Show is a comedian-hosted variety show that is one of the longest-running television shows in history.  It has always been based in New York City except for two decades during the long tenure of Johnny Carson: 1972-1992.  Its hosts, in order, have been:  Steve Allen (1954–1957), Jack Paar (1957–1962), Johnny Carson (1962–1992), Jay Leno (twice: 1992–2009 and 2010–2014), Conan O'Brien (2009–2010), and Jimmy Fallon (2014–present)

While The Tonight Show began and continues as a New York City show, Johnny Carson made it a Los Angeles show for the two important decades from 1972-1992, during the uncensoring of American media and the climax of Los Angeles's national and global predominance.  These were the New Right years of Nixon and Reagan, the End of the Cold War, and the American Uprising of 1988-92.  Groucho Marx introduced Carson as the new host on 1 October 1962, and Johnny CArson signed off at the end of his last show in Burbank on 22 May 1992.
