Otto Abetz

Otto Abetz (1903-1958) served as the head German diplomat to Vichy France from 1940 to 1944. Abetz sought to achieve full collaboration with France and founded the German Institute in 1940 to ameliorate Franco-German relations and to expose French citizens to German culture. In July 1949 he was convicted of various war crimes, most notably for his involvement in the deportation of French Jews to concentration camps (Chen, "Otto Abetz").
