Shirley Anita St. Hill Chisholm (1924-2005) was the first African American woman elected to Congress. She represented New York's 12th Congressional District from 1969-1983. In 1972 Chisholm campaigned for the Democratic nomination for the presidency. She was the first African American and first woman to run for president. She won 10% of the vote at the Democratic National Convention.
