Dunham was born on 7 September 1844 at Berlin, Worcester County, Maryland, the son of Francis Sylvester and Leah Ann (Handy) Dunham. He attended Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, but left before he could graduate because of the Civil War. Returning home, he worked as a clerk in the Baltimore post office. He read for orders and was ordained a deacon in 1869 and a priest in 1871 by Bishop Whittingham. His first parish was at St. John's, Mount Morris, New York in 1875. He went to Indianapolis, serving a church from 1878 to 1881. He married Susan Cromie in New Albany, Indiana, on 7 January 1879. He moved to South Bend in 1881 to become rector of St. James Church, and remained there until 1884, resigning after a bout with pneumonia. He moved south with his family and served as rector of Holy Trinity Church, Gainesville, and later Christ Church, Pensacola, Florida. Continuing to be ill, he returned north and became rector of the Church of the Redeemer in Hyde Park, Chicago. He died in Chicago on 21 April 1895 and was buried in Oak Woods Cemetery.
