Users get used to the patterns of popular websites, and trying to remix that pattern is an inconvenience. LINGsCARS is an eyesore, but it follows the same basic structure as several hundred other websites, so it's still easy to navigate and use. There are ways to make your website different, but changing the navigation probably shouldn't be one of them, unless you've got a very good reason for doing so.
