DH in Religious Studies: A Collection of Digital Essays

Embedding Visualizations

To embed visualizations from Flourish or other external platforms, remember that Scalar approaches all content modularly - everything has its own page within Scalar.

The first step for adding a graph from a service like Flourish is to import the graph as a media object. To do this, click on the wrench in the upper right corner and then click on the "Content" tab.

At the bottom, select to "Import Media" and the select "Internet URL". This will launch the "Import Internet Media File" page where you can set the URL, give the image a title, and also control how it will sit on the page.

To finish, click "Save and View." Your graph should now appear as its own page within Scalar.

Now that you have a media item for your graph, you can add it to your essay. The blue bottons at the top of the editing window are how you add Scalar elements to your text. These can be added as a link or as an embedded item - for our essays, you will primarily used the embedded or inline version.

Select the "Insert Inline Scalar Media Link" and then click on your image or graph from the list.

Choose among the provided options and click continue. Your media file will appear as a grey box within your essay.

To verify that it loaded correctly, click "Save and View".

For Voyant-Tools, be sure to to use the default export option to get the URL for a particular view. This will load into Scalar correctly (where the embed code will not.)

This process of creating a media object from a URL works for most of the digital elements that you may want to include in your essay.
