Creating Your Essay
Scalar is a content management system and authoring platform designed to be modular and to emphasize the linking of elements. Everything in Scalar has its own page (from media files to annotations to tags to content) and those pages are then woven together into larger essays and paths.
You have been added as authors and will be using the platform to create a multi-modal essay for your final project. Your essay is an opportunity to experiment with the techniques we have been discussing in class in order to create something different than your standard 5 paragraph academic essay. There is a list of component parts that you will need include in your essay in the assignment prompt. These requirements are to encourage you to think about new ways to communicate your research findings. Your essay can span multiple pages if you would like, or it can be a single "page" essay.
The project already has a path (which you are currently on) with a series of example essays that both demonstrate different features of the Scalar software as well as provide instruction on how to use them. You can add whatever media, pages, or other content you need to the site and can make use of any content you find here in building your essay.
Once all the essays are completed, they will be published as a "volume" for the course. Please remember to assign your essay a "Key Image" (under "Styling") that will appear in the table of contents for the volume.
Please be bold and adventurous as you create your essays. It is ok if things do not come together exactly as you would like - I evaluate on effort and variety of things tried rather than on perfect outcomes. And reach out at any time if you need help along the way.
Happy authoring!
