Bringing the Holy Land Home: The Crusades, Chertsey Abbey, and the Reconstruction of a Medieval Masterpiece

Where was this produced?

This tile was produced in Chertsey, Surrey, England. The tile was assumed to be designed for one of the royal palaces of Henry III. It was only used after its initial location as tiling in the Chersey Abbey. The tiles were initially thought to have been constructed in France, but in 1922 faulty tiles were discovered near the tile kiln in the Abbey Gardens. The clay originated from an area in the south of the town between Hanworth Lane and Sandgates. Tiles were presumed to have been made on site to refloor the church in the Chertsey Abbey after being partially destroyed in a fire in 1235.
