After the Crusaders of the Fourth Crusade shifted their attention to the Byzantine Empire in Constantinople, they completed a successful yet disgracefully destructive attack on this empire. The Crusaders were ruthless as they ravaged the empire while destroying places of worship, taking anything they could as war loot, and even taking sexual advantage of several women living in Constantinople.

So, when the Crusaders founded the Latin Empire, it was on rocky foundations. The Crusade left the Byzantine Empire scattered in pieces but gave its central city of Constantinople power to the new Latin Empire. Although many Crusaders saw this conquest as a success, the outcomes of the Fourth Crusade were long-lasting in deepening the problems of the West and the bitter relationship between Eastern and Western Christians.
