Bringing the Holy Land Home: The Crusades, Chertsey Abbey, and the Reconstruction of a Medieval Masterpiece

Where did this go?

There is no real way to track down where this particular seal went. We know that one time during Emperor Henry of Flanders’s reign it was used when he issued a document to be sent with this seal on it. To where? The possibilities are endless. While the dies and the boulloterion used to make the seal would not leave the office of the empire, this seal had the opportunity to leave Constantinople.

Wherever this seal ended up, the image of the emperor on this seal indeed traveled far beyond the confines of the empire. A seal like this one certainly traveled across different lands and peoples during the emperor’s reign. Someone who received a document with this seal was likely in an authoritative position and received several other documents that would contain a seal with someone’s stamp of approval. And so, it would be notable to consider that this seal was among the many within the context of authoritative power during the Crusades.
