Creative Practice as Research: Discourse on Methodology

Step 1: Establish a Research Problem/Question

The exercise on beginning your research project was designed to help you with this step.

What would you like to explore via your creative practice?

NOTE: It is vital that your research question requires the practice in order to be explored and answered.  If the question can be answered without doing any sort of practice, you need to revisit it.

Example: How does composing in a densely populated area (such as a coffee shop located in central New York City) affect the creative process, compared to composing in a quiet, controlled environment (such as a private study)?

This first step is vital to the research project; the research question will direct the background research, help to develop the methodology specific to the given project, and keep the research activities on track throughout a long-term project.
