Creative Practice as Research: Discourse on Methodology

Step 3: Outline Research Method

The exercise on outlining your methodology was designed to help you with this step.

How are you going to go about conducting your research?  This includes both critical research (as you would do for any textual analysis), as well as an outline of the practice.

(Brief) Example: Spend one week at home, composing a story in the favored, controlled environment.  Then spend one week with all writing sessions in said coffee shop, composing another story (of similar genre, length, etc.).  At the end of each writing session, log the experiences, including progress on the story, distractions, emotional state, relevant actions, etc.  When finished, compare the logs, and conduct comparative textual analysis on the resulting stories.

Practice-based research is frequently an act of exploration and discovery.  It is often difficult at the start of a project to predict the final outcome, or even to formulate the final research question, because these elements are shaped by the creative practice.  So while you may start with a question and an idea of how it’s all going to turn out, you need to incorporate some flexibility in both.
