Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

Nature strikes back:
This manga takes a more abstract approach to climate change, in that all living beings are turned into stone. Nonetheless, from the setting of the story, the disaster that occurred was natural and petrified all of humanity. Demonstrating that the Earth is powerful and will not hesitate to attack all of humanity to pay for their mistakes.
Importance of science:
With Senuku’s goal to establish a kingdom of science, this reveals how important science is to the revival of the world. Not only does this lesson apply to the manga, but it also is applicable in real life, in the prevention of global warming and climate change. Oftentimes, governments and people in power make decisions based on what is good economically, sacrificing the environment. However, this manga showcases science is what our society needs in order to prevent disasters from happening, more realistic of course, but nonetheless, a disaster.
The fate of the heart is in the hands of the younger generations:
Given that Senuku and all of his friends are in their mid-teens and it is up to them to establish a new kingdom of science, this is an example of the younger generation being responsible for improving climate change and natural disasters caused by it. This is a common theme amongst many eco horror media, because it reflects the reality of the world, in that the younger generation is left with the Earth the longest and that climate and natural disasters often affect the younger generations more because of this.
