Whether it be counseling, a treatment center, or a hospital, a healthcare nonprofit is simply an organization that provides a service that improves the health of individuals and society as a whole while not making profit (Wyland). The entities can range from nationwide organizations, such as the American Cancer Society, to small, local charities that work hard within local communities. Healthcare nonprofits are vital to society, as the government can only provide so much and the private sector can sometimes be too money-oriented. In the Cleveland metropolitan area, there are four small healthcare nonprofits that stand out in their noble and efficient work: The Free Medical Clinic of Greater Cleveland, Hope Lodge, Recovery Resources, and Mission4Maureen.
Of the unifying characteristics that make these nonprofits "All-Stars", the most important is that they are all accessible to most people in the Cleveland area; the locations of these organizations make it easy to receive healthcare. Other criteria for awarding these charities All-Star status include:
Do they raise money efficiently and effectively?
Are they able to serve many patients?
Are they able to attract volunteers?
Are they allocating funds effectively?
Are they financially accountable?
Are they providing great care to patients?
Let's take a closer look into what makes these nonprofits All-Stars.
The Free Medical Clinic of Greater Cleveland, or The Free Clinic, is a healthcare nonprofit founded in Cleveland, Ohio in 1970, when the building in University Circle that still houses the clinic today was built. This organization's goal is to provide world-class healthcare to patients and their families regardless of one's ability to pay. The Free Clinic also tries to reach out to the community and advocate for more accessible healthcare for communities. The facility is open every Monday-Friday along with two Saturday's a month. Services in The Free Clinic include:
Primary Care
Walk-in Clinic
Teen and Pediatric Clinic
Dental Health Services
Mental Health/Substance Abuse Counseling
HIV Testing
Becoming a patient at The Free Clinic is a simple process. To set up a registration appointment, one can call (216) 721-4010. Then, at the appointment, one has to provide a state ID, proof of income, a health insurance card, and proof of family size. All of this information is kept confidential in The Free Clinic's records.
