  Introducción
  Entre abril y agosto de 2017 se realizaron en INCLUIR - Instituto para la Inclusión Social y el Desarrollo Humano - de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires dos jornadas llamadas “Memoria Histórica Presente, en movimiento hacia la permanente auto-organización colectiva.” Allí un equipo interdisciplinario conformado por personas de diferente trayectoria y formación se propuso reflexionar sobre el pasado reciente, presente y futuro de la auto-organización [1].
  
  Para este fin diseñamos un modelo de trabajo que incorporó el uso de imágenes como elemento central, a través de una práctica que extiende el campo de lo visual  por fuera del marco de la imagen hacia los gestos, los espacios, el contexto y la oralidad en su variedad de registros. Analizamos los montajes y collages realizados tanto como los registros fotográficos y de video que obtuvimos en ambas jornadas, entendiendo que las creaciones visuales y las acciones colectivas configuran una trama compleja de interacciones que se da justamente a través de las imágenes y que no podría deducirse del análisis de cada una de éstas por separado.
  
  Buscaremos en este escrito ver de qué forma una metodología que se basa en un encuentro entre cuerpo, imagen y palabra permite avanzar por sobre otras donde se toma como intercambio solamente el razonamiento argumental.  Para ello presentaremos primero las experiencias de las dos jornadas y después indagaremos sobre los vínculos entre memoria y acción, para terminar con consideraciones sobre la metodología aplicada a estos temas.
  
  Primera Jornada - Trabajo con imágenes aportadas por los participantes
  La convocatoria solicitaba que cada participante trajera una imagen, texto, objeto o material audiovisual sobre las experiencias de la auto-organización del pasado reciente de la Argentina y Latinoamérica para trabajar con ellos en un montaje visual y narrativo de producción colectiva.
  
  En la apertura de este primer encuentro uno de los participantes advirtió a los presentes que tuvieran en cuenta que las imágenes y las narraciones no dominaran las unas sobre las otras. Esta tensión entre imágenes y palabras no es nueva. Schwab (2008) propone que la investigación artística puede ser vista como si saliera de la nada si entendemos la ciencia como la forma “clásica” de desarrollar conocimientos. Fernández Polanco aboga por impulsar un “ejercicio de libertad” donde la escritura “no se realiza con (o frente a) estas obras sino que arranca con ellas, un espacio donde no se produce un antagonismo entre lo visual y lo lingüístico, sino su acuerdo para juntos generar pensamiento, un pensamiento con y a través de las imágenes, no sólo en tanto ‘pictures’” (2013:112). Ampliando estas aseveraciones, nos atrevemos a pensar que ningún discurso es posible sin lo visual, tomando aquí visual en su sentido más amplio, y que quizás el vínculo siempre inquieto entre imágenes y palabras es lo que nos resulta tan atractivo.
  
  La jornada se organizó en tres momentos: el primero con formato taller donde se trabajó con las imágenes y luego dos momentos posteriores de exposición a cargo de miembros del equipo. La secuencia de fotogramas presentada más abajo está tomada de los registros de este primer momento, en el cual nos basamos para desarrollar el análisis que aquí se presenta. Da cuenta de un proceso donde se dieron pautas claras pero amplias sobre cómo trabajar con el material: los participantes debían colocar la foto u objeto que habían traído sobre una tela y agregarle una pequeña nota sobre su contexto. Ante el vacío del lienzo, una de nosotras colocó la primera imagen y de a poco se fue poblando la tela; las conexiones entre imágenes se vieron reforzadas con el uso de la palabra, tal como se ve en el clip a continuación.
  
  
  Al momento de pasar a la segunda instancia que suponía presentaciones preparadas de antemano por miembros del equipo, sin embargo, la modalidad de presentación terminó por romperse ante el deseo de expresión de quienes no habían podido hablar todavía sobre las imágenes que habían traído. El esquema temporal se desarmó y debió ceder irrevocablemente ante la potencia de aquellas voces que querían ser escuchadas. Hubo finalmente menos tiempo para las dos presentaciones posteriores.
  
  Esta disputa entre el tiempo planificado de antemano y el deseo de narrar manifiesta la necesidad de poner en primer plano el cuerpo y la emoción cuando se trabaja con metodologías que apuntan a la construcción de un pensamiento colectivo.  Estas acciones son las que marcaron los tiempos metodológicos: el flujo de la palabra permitió completar un circuito de conexiones entre imágenes, historias y personas que no se hubieran desplegado si se hubiera interrumpido el discurso para pasar a las otras actividades programadas como exposiciones.
  
  Cada relato se fue nutriendo del anterior, dejando en evidencia cómo cada ejemplo de resistencia  (elegido por los participantes a través de las imágenes que traían para compartir) respondía a una lógica de organización comunitaria, auto-gestionada, contra-hegemónica. El material mismo permitió conexiones intuitivas entre imágenes/objetos y acciones/cuerpos/gestualidades/discursos.

   

  ...las fotografías pueden impactar a los sujetos llevándolos a una nueva percepción de su existencia social. Mientras consideran este nuevo marco desde donde mirar estas experiencias ya dadas por sentado, pueden deconstruir sus propias presunciones fenomenológicas […] También es posible usar imágenes como puentes entre mundos que son culturalmente diferentes (Harper, 2002:21) [2].

  
  En un análisis posterior, se evidenciaron distintas secuencias en el material de video y fotográfico generado ese día:

  • La puesta en común del material que cada participante trajo, en un orden espacial sobre el plano de una mesa;
  • El orden de colocación de las fotos y objetos sobre la tela;
  • La toma de la palabra sobre estas fotos y objetos;
  • La secuencia cronológica de los eventos a los que cada imagen u objeto hace referencia;
  • El modo en que las narraciones generaron vínculos entre los diferentes materiales según las referencias afectivas, emocionales y de memoria que cada participante pudo realizar.

  Esta metodología pone de relieve la multiplicidad de posibilidades que brindan las conexiones entre imagen, recuerdo, intercambio oral y composición colectiva. Asimismo permite hacer distintos análisis de las interacciones que ocurren en este tipo de trabajo. La lectura por separado de cada secuencia proporciona una visión parcial de los intercambios que puede resultar interesante de analizar en sí misma. Sin embargo, existe una entidad de las acciones que aporta una riqueza que no se puede extraer de un único análisis secuencial. Por ejemplo, el trabajo en paridad del equipo no puede inferirse de la observación de una de estas listas por separado pero se podría llegar a una aproximación de que efectivamente existió si se toman varias de estas secuencias a la vez.
  
  Segunda Jornada - Collage y cuerpos en acción
  En la segunda Jornada partimos de un archivo de cien imágenes: las aportadas en la sesión anterior; algunos recortes o acercamientos de estas imágenes; y capturas de pantalla de lo filmado, en donde puede verse a los propios participantes ensamblando el montaje del primer encuentro y narrándolo. Dispusimos esas imágenes azarosamente desordenadas, entremezcladas y superpuestas en una mesa.
  
  La primera propuesta fue que los participantes observaran ese armado durante unos pocos minutos en silencio e intentaran registrar qué sensación les producía esa acumulación. A continuación, fueron invitados a escribir unas líneas sobre esa percepción.
   

  (…) Las imágenes de otras imágenes de Cutral-Có. Fragmentos de caras, ojos, bocas, que me estremecen pensando en dónde andará Santiago Maldonado (¿Dónde andarán todos esos que aparecen en estas imágenes ahora?) Demasiado caos para destilar razón. Cien razones para descomponer el Caos.

  Este relato trajo al presente las imágenes del pasado y se vio aquí cómo conflictos antiguos y actuales se vinculan íntimamente y sostienen, a partir de ese nexo, la formulación de preguntas esenciales a los objetivos de la jornada.  Por ejemplo, las imágenes del levantamiento de 1997 en Cutral Có, en la provincia de Neuquén, están fuertemente ligadas a la desaparición forzada de Santiago Maldonado, activista a favor de la causa del pueblo Mapuche, ocurrida tres semanas antes de la segunda jornada en la misma provincia [3].
  
  En la cita anterior, al hablar de “demasiado caos” se enfatizó que el desorden, la acumulación masiva y la superposición de las imágenes dificultaron los intentos por analizarlas individualmente y racionalizar lo que se veía. Entonces ganó la sensación, un contenido emocional que atravesó las imágenes, creando el texto casi sin describirlas. Los participantes indicaron que la presentación de estas imágenes - tal cual quedaron armadas - inducía a la vista a recorrerlas velozmente. Era difícil para la mirada centrarse en el registro detallado de una u otra imagen. Era casi imposible recortarlas entre sí y aislarlas para su análisis. Sin embargo, según escribieron los presentes en éste y otros relatos, hubo imágenes que parecían emerger del conjunto, iluminarse, y no fueron las mismas para todos. Estas imágenes a su vez se conectaron unas a otras formando puentes entre espacios no yuxtapuestos, “torciendo” la continuidad temporal que parecía estar determinada por su ordenamiento espacial.
  
  Al concluir este ejercicio, la reflexión se orientó hacia  pensar en voz alta por qué la mirada se situó en determinados territorios y los habitó, y qué calma o, por lo contrario, inquietud otorgaron esas imágenes especialmente como refugio al ritmo vertiginoso del bloque. Lo que iluminó una u otra imagen para cada participante se relaciona con el modo en que se estableció un vínculo con ella: es el encuentro con aquello que nos invita a la investigación.
  
  Un segundo ejercicio propuso trasladar las imágenes a una nueva mesa siguiendo algunas reglas predeterminadas. Ejercicio silencioso. Podían pararse como máximo tres personas a la vez y elegir una o varias imágenes, cualquiera que desearan. Debían ubicarlas en la segunda mesa y ninguna podía quedar oculta o totalmente visible. Como en un ejercicio teatral, todos se sentaron en sillas a cierta distancia del material. Esta distancia dispuso a los presentes a auto-percibirse como una audiencia que era observadora pero que al mismo tiempo sería desafiada a quebrar el marco escénico y tomar la acción desde un fuerte ejercicio de voluntad, un encuentro con el deseo que podría llegar a imponerse sobre el espacio de otros - pura dinámica grupal.
  
  
  La propuesta de este trabajo puso en evidencia roles, tensiones y espacios de poder cuyo análisis excede el cometido de este escrito. Desde la coordinación decidimos tomar nota de estas dinámicas pero no intervenir en las acciones que se presentaban, incluso cuando algunas de éstas rompían las reglas propuestas, porque consideramos esas rupturas como manifestaciones que podrían capitalizarse en una lectura posterior.
  
  Al finalizar el segundo ejercicio, los presentes relataron que construir y componer un nuevo orden del material generó otro modo de relacionarse con las imágenes: hubo una intencionalidad, ya sea consciente o no, pensada analíticamente o no, pero con un orden más involucrado. Las personas pudieron narrar y significar la elección de unas u otras fotos del cúmulo de las cien imágenes y debieron gestionar activamente su vínculo con ellas y con la composición que se iba generando a cada momento.
  
  Un tercer ejercicio propuso crear un relato secuencial con todas las imágenes: había que  colocarlas en el piso creando una línea de tiempo con principio y fin, de forma libre. La secuencia a construir podía ser una narrativa lineal, fragmentada, cronológica, dispersa, argumentada o ninguna de estas cosas. Nuevamente el equipo de trabajo puso en juego saberes y experiencias previas con lo visual multimedial, en algunos casos, o de orden más ligado a conocimientos históricos en otros y se fueron configurando roles y modos diversos de participación.

  
  
  

  
  El relato que terminó ganando el consenso del equipo fue una recreación o construcción fantasiosa pero anclada en lo real, donde se podían encontrar niños de la calle, un guerrillero heroico, docentes en lucha e investigadores. Otros elementos, en especial los menos figurativos, se permitieron jugar otros papeles: una foto cortada en finas tiritas y entramada como un tejido se convirtió en el modo en que los medios de comunicación distorsionan los hechos; otra foto rota a mano en muchos pedazos, una crisis. Quedó, como resultado del aporte de muchas voces, un relato que habla de auto-organización, de ciclos repletos de crisis, replegamientos y despliegues sociales. Un cuento espiralado que retorna al comienzo en un nuevo plano de la historia de la auto-organización y de esa narración en particular.
  
  El material disponible terminó siendo utilizado en su totalidad. Sin embargo, en un determinado momento uno de los participantes separó todas las fotos en las que aparecían los miembros del equipo durante la jornada anterior. Este hecho no fue percibido por el grupo hasta casi el final del ejercicio. Dijeron, entonces:
   

  -Faltamos nosotros
  (…)
  -¿Cómo nos integramos en esta historia?

  
  Tomamos este acto como una clave para analizar cómo el equipo de investigadores (así se auto-definen) se vinculó con la narración. Cabe preguntarse qué efecto produjo el sacar los propios cuerpos fotografiados del plano del trabajo y si hubo dificultades para integrarlos nuevamente.  Como investigadoras-participantes de estas jornadas, esta secuencia se nos “iluminó” e inferimos entonces que este vínculo investigador-objeto nos resulta atractivo para continuar nuestras indagaciones.  En este sentido, nuestras prácticas artísticas parecen facilitarnos los recorridos: integran múltiples planos del pensamiento y vinculan espacios, formas y cuerpos.
  
  Re-memorar, conmemorar, atestiguar.  Resistir.
  El propósito de las dos jornadas era reflexionar sobre las características de la auto-organización. Sin embargo, el trabajo propuesto a partir de los materiales permitió un ejercicio de la memoria colectiva que devino también, en un cierto modo, en conmemoración y atestiguamiento.
   

  Creo que la foto-elicitación excava pozos más profundos en la conciencia humana que las entrevistas meramente orales.  Esto es en parte a causa de cómo el recordar está magnificado por las fotografías y en parte por la calidad particular de la fotografía en sí misma.  Las fotografías parecen capturar lo imposible: una persona que ya no está; un evento pasado.  Ese sentido extraordinario de parecer recuperar algo que ha desaparecido pertenece solo a la fotografía y lleva a discusiones profundas e interesantes. (Harper, 2002:22-23) [4].

  
  En su crítica de “The Missing Pieces”, una obra de Henri Lefebvre que enumera poemas, edificios, sinfonías, obras de arte que ya no existen en el mundo (quedando sólo el registro de que alguna vez existieron), Alena Alexandrova (2014) la describe como una lista anárquica sin contexto territorial o temporal pero que como cualquier lista, pone en evidencia lo que no está en ella, las “ausencias saturadas”. Nuestro trabajo durante la primera jornada se yergue como una posible lista, con recorridos repletos de ausencias y que trazan posibles narrativas coherentes donde ubicar las piezas rescatadas, pero evidenciando las que aún quedan por encontrar. El espacio vacío entre imágenes se convierte en una metáfora de otras historias invisibles. En la segunda jornada, esos espacios se saturan de imágenes que hacen eco de la primera, pero a las que se suman otras que nos representan – fotogramas del registro de esa primera vez – y que multiplican las posibilidades de conexión entre las mismas.  Vemos y nos vemos en esas imágenes; nos pensamos y re-pensamos nuestra historia y el presente.
  
  La construcción de la memoria colectiva no deambula por un camino fácil. Como argumenta Walker (2017) en su trabajo sobre los sucesos del 11 de septiembre de 2001 en Estados Unidos, el recuerdo personal se sostiene sobre una memoria colectiva ya establecida de lo ocurrido y en contraposición a un gran despliegue en la literatura, las artes y la teoría producidas en respuesta a eso mismo que sucedió. Si bien no es posible crear una memoria total sin caer en un presente eterno donde el horizonte de la cultura fuera solo revivir el pasado (Alexandrova, 2014) el ejercicio de la memoria debe constituirse en una acción colectiva, consciente y reiterada para evitar que la historia la haga desaparecer.
  
  Para Young (1999), el proceso de conmemoración deber permanecer incompleto para garantizar la vida de la memoria: la conmemoración se convierte en un proceso y no una respuesta, un lugar que permite que haya tiempo para la reflexión conmemorativa, contemplativa y el aprendizaje. Al mismo tiempo, estos procesos dialogan directamente con la posibilidad de construir/reconstruir memoria y, en casos de eventos traumáticos, resignificar la memoria histórica plasmada en discursos oficiales o populares. Es necesario, sin embargo, un proceso de concientización, de acción consciente, donde lo nuevo, lo aprendido, se convierta en aprehendido y sea ampliamente socializado para poder ejercer el cambio. Estos actos donde una persona deviene en testigo, o atestigua, desafían los regímenes de representación y crean imaginarios espaciales múltiples (Cambre, 2014) donde lo establecido, lo dado, no es la única posibilidad. Esta “corporización” de la mirada, el darse cuenta de algo y actuar sobre ello transforma al espectador (onlooker) en testigo (witness). El testigo se convierte en prueba misma de la evidencia: lo que está afuera se convierte en parte del ser – uno se vuelve testigo al llevar la carga del testimonio (bearing witness) (Cambre, 2015).
  
  La metodología utilizada para las jornadas propició la apertura de espacios físicos y temporales para la contemplación de lo expuesto, lo escrito y lo narrado. La memoria tuvo lugar en el encuentro entre el participante, la tela y la mente/corazón/conciencia del observador. En las jornadas, no sólo se dio un espacio para la conmemoración y re-memoración, sino que los participantes se transformaron en testigos y corporizaron su mirada para dar nuevos significados a las imágenes con las que trabajaron.
  
  El espacio de creación se volvió entonces un espacio de resistencia, de construcción de narrativas alternativas, donde las imágenes jugaron un papel disparador de nuevas posibilidades, nuevos discursos, nuevas enunciaciones y relaciones entre las partes. Estos procesos artísticos son de por sí contra-hegemónicos y subversivos, porque cuestionan las nociones de un único discurso, mirada, narración histórica o memoria.
  
  Algunas consideraciones metodológicas
  Se proponen tres consideraciones a tener en cuenta al utilizar esta metodología: una sobre el contexto de la investigación, una segunda sobre el trabajo en paridad y una tercera sobre la toma de registros para su análisis.
  
  Al encarar un trabajo de esta naturaleza, el equipo que se disponga a hacerlo, sea docente o de investigación, debe tener en cuenta el contexto histórico local, el tipo de representaciones sobre esas historias que se reproducen regularmente en los medios de comunicación y las instituciones, así como la existencia de narraciones alternativas.
  
  El desafío radica en poder desentramar esas narraciones a través del juego de conectar y yuxtaponer las imágenes en un proceso de creación colectiva. Dado que ninguna imagen es mejor que otra, todas tienen la posibilidad de disparar algún tipo de interacción con los participantes. Esto permite un juego “rasante” que ubica a las imágenes y al equipo en una situación de paridad: todos los participantes están en igualdad de condiciones para presentar su opinión, ponerla a debate y proponer posibles respuestas a las preguntas formuladas para esa jornada.
  
  Para evidenciar si esto ocurre en la práctica, es necesario que se tomen varios registros audiovisuales que permitan una investigación de y por los participantes. En nuestra segunda jornada una tercera persona – es decir alguien que no coordinaba ni participaba – tuvo a cargo el registro audiovisual con dos cámaras en mano y se usó además una cámara cenital que filmó el armado del collage colectivo. Estos elementos fueron imprescindibles a la hora de analizar las gestualidades, narrativas y discusiones que se fueron dando durante la jornada.
  
  Reflexiones finales
  Al comienzo de este trabajo nos propusimos responder de qué forma esta metodología basada en un encuentro entre cuerpo, imagen y palabra permitía avanzar por sobre otras metodologías donde primaba el razonamiento argumental. Si bien en la Argentina existen experiencias recientes de trabajo con imágenes [5], la metodología utilizada en estas jornadas podría representar una novedad en dos sentidos: por un lado, trabajar con un conjunto de múltiples imágenes y entrevistados simultáneamente y, por el otro, aportar un plus de información que surge del proceso de construcción colectiva, que consideramos interesante analizar. La secuencia de las distintas voces y discursos, su relación y mutua afectación, terminan construyendo un relato colectivo que es más que la suma de las partes. Asimismo, incentivar a los entrevistados a “jugar “con las imágenes y vincularlas espacialmente permite habilitar canales de asociación más activos y profundos, tanto como comprometer al grupo con el material percibido como una totalidad.
  
  En este proceso múltiple quienes investigan también crean, observan, se observan e interactúan entre sí y con los materiales. Esto los convierte en testigos-actores de su propia producción, habilitando a que lo heurístico emerja desde el material mismo porque se genera (junto con la obra) un espacio de análisis vivo e involucrado.
  
  Las acciones que conforman este proceso de creación-investigación pueden analizarse, además, desde la óptica de lo performático, en tanto quienes están presentes tienen la posibilidad de tomar un registro consciente de esas propias acciones en un espacio que puede ser percibido como una puesta en escena. La metodología que utilizamos habilita al cuerpo, la acción, el espacio y la oralidad a desentramar significados que podrían verse agotados o derivar en callejones sin salida si fueran solamente argumentales. Es a partir del juego en acción con las imágenes que otros discursos pueden tomar espacio y promover nuevas maneras de investigar.
  
  En este sentido, definimos la investigación como un proceso de aprendizaje con la intención concreta de marcar que el intercambio, o más precisamente la acción colectiva, no sólo predispone sino que fuerza a los equipos de trabajo interdisciplinarios a poner en juego las matrices más básicas de sus esquemas de abordaje. Aprender es, en este sentido, renunciar al poder que un conocimiento específico de cada campo podría otorgar. La pertenencia a un micro mundo que ejerce un mandato sobre el uso de la palabra se desarma ante la perspectiva de un horizonte más saludable: profundizar en nuestras disciplinas es abrirlas a un campo de relaciones a partir del cual re-definirlas. (Cosachov & Scolnik, 2008).
  
  Romper las fronteras disciplinarias es para nosotras, como equipo de trabajo, un desafío a la mirada. En este sentido la tela, los papeles pegados, el espacio de la sala, el tiempo de cada acción, los intervalos en la palabra y los movimientos gestuales, proporcionan un mapa complejo en el que las formas-tiempo y las formas-espacio se abren y conectan multi-direccionalmente. No hay orden ni borde que tenga la suficiente permanencia para enmarcar el discurso, no hay perspectiva central ni predominante ante una multiplicidad de miradas que se encuentran, equiparadas en valor y sustentadas en la escucha.
  
  De la misma manera, los cuerpos, en tanto marcos o bordes, se transforman como los discursos en testigos de otros cuerpos y palabras que los precedieron y les permiten pensar y actuar sobre esas pulsiones que dieron lugar a hechos de resistencia en un pasado no muy lejano.
  
  Son esos cuerpos juntos, formando un organismo colectivo en movimiento, los que tomaron el desafío de pensar la auto-organización a través de la historia reciente y a pensarse como cuerpo-resistente al accionar del Estado en casos de vulneración o violación de derechos y a políticas de opresión.  En ambas jornadas, el trabajo de un grupo que se conformó en paridad iluminó la recuperación de la memoria como proceso colectivo, activo, creativo y en constante construcción.
  
  En este sentido es que reconocemos en el Arte y en sus procesos una herramienta de naturaleza subversiva, ya que está en su raíz agenciar y desafiar los órdenes tanto como poner en evidencia aquello que no está permitido o que está afuera de la norma.

  Between April and August 2017, two workshops called “Historical Memory Today: towards permanent collective self-organization” at INCLUIR - Instituto para la Inclusión Social y el Desarrollo Humano (Institute for Social Inclusion and Human Development) took place in the city of  Buenos Aires. A multi-disciplinary team made up of people with different backgrounds in training and experience gathered to reflect on issues around self-organization in the recent past, present and future [1].
  
  To this end, we designed a model of work that used images at its core, using a practice that extends the visual field outside of the frame of the image, and includes gestures, space, context and verbal expressions in its multiple varieties.  We analyzed the montage and collage that were produced at the two meetings, as well as the photographs and videos that registered both workshops, understanding that visual creations and collective actions produce a complex weave of interactions through images that could not be deduced from the analysis of each one of these by themselves. In this piece of writing we will seek to see how a methodology based on an encounter between bodies, images and words goes further than others that use lines of reasoning as the only type of exchange. To this end, we will first present the results from both workshops; later discuss the links between memory and action; and finish by presenting methodological considerations applied to these themes.
  
  First Workshop – Working with images provided by participants
  We asked participants to bring an image, text, object or audiovisual material related to experiences of self-organization in the recent past in Argentina or Latin America, in order to create a collective visual and narrative montage. At the beginning of this first meeting, one of the participants stated that it was important that images and accounts didn’t dominate one over the other. 
  
  This tension between images and words is not new. Schwab (2008) proposes that artistic research could be seen as coming out of nowhere if we understand science as the “classic” form of developing knowledge. Fernández Polanco advocates encouraging an “exercise of freedom” where writing “is not made with (o facing) these works, but that begins with them, a space where there is no antagonism between the visual and the linguistic, but their accord to jointly generate thinking, thinking with or through images, not only as ‘pictures’” (2013:112) [2]. Going further, we dare think that no discourse is possible without the visual, taking it in its wider sense, and that perhaps the lively link between images and words is what makes it so attractive.
  
  The day was divided into three: the first one being the workshop where we worked with images and then two other moments where members of the team presented other works on the same theme. The following sequence is taken from a recording made during the workshop and on which we have based our analysis. It shows a process where clear but broad instructions were given on how to work with the materials: participants were asked to place the image or object that they had brought with them on a canvas, and add a brief label explaining its context. Facing the void of the canvas, one of us put the first image and slowly the cloth was filled; connections between images were reinforced as participants spoke about them, as we see below:
   
  
  When it was time to move on to the second instance, involving a presentation prepared beforehand by members of the team, the proposed agenda was broken by the desire of those participants who had not had a chance to speak, to share their image or object.  The time scheme was dismantled, ceding its place unequivocally to the potency of those voices that demanded to be heard. There was finally less time for the two presentations that followed. This dispute between scheduled time and the desire to speak manifest the need to put right upfront the body and emotion when one works with methodologies that promotes collective thinking. These actions mark time methodologically: the flow of speech allowed a circuit of connections to be completed between images, histories and people that would not have been displayed if the stories had been interrupted to move on to the other planned activities.
  
  Each story was feeding the next, making evident how each example of resistance (represented by the images chosen by the participants) responded to a logic of community self-organization, that was portrayed as counter-hegemonic by participants. The material itself allowed intuitive connections between images-objects and actions-bodies-gestures- discourses.

  ...photographs can jolt subjects into a new awareness of their social existence. As someone considers this new framing of taken-for-granted experiences they are able to deconstruct their own phenomenological assumptions […] photographs may lead an individual to a new view of their social existence. It is also possible to use images as bridges between worlds that are more culturally distinct. (Harper, 2002: 21)

  Different sequences were identified later using video and photographic material generated that day:

  • The material shared by each participant, in a spatial order on a plane, that is, a table;
  • The order images and objects were placed on the canvas;
  • The order in which participants spoke about these images and objects;
  • The chronological sequence of events to which each image or object was related;
  • The way in which the stories generated links between materials according to the affective, emotional and memory references that each participant was able to make.

   This methodology makes evident the multiplicity of possibilities offered by connections between images, memories, oral exchanges and collective compositions. It also allows for different analyses of the interactions that happen in this type of work. Reading each sequence on its own, one would get a partial vision of the exchanges – which can be interesting on its own merit.  However, there is an entity to the actions that provide a richness that cannot be drawn from a single sequential analysis. For example, the teamwork’s parity cannot be inferred from the observation of one of these lists separately, but one could say that there was effectively parity in the work carried out by looking at several of these sequences at the same time [3].
  
  Second Workshop - Collage and bodies in action
  During the second workshop, we started from an archive of 100 images: those brought for the first workshop; some enlargements or cropping of these images; and print-screens of video recordings, where participants were seen assembling the montage on the canvas in the first workshop and then talking about it. We distributed these images randomly, mixing and overlapping them on a table. The first exercise was to ask participants to look silently at the visual arrangement for a few minutes, trying to make a note of the sensations produced by that accumulation. They were then invited to write a few lines about that perception.

  (…) The images of other images of Cutral-Có. Fragments of faces, eyes, mouths that make me shudder thinking where is Santiago Maldonado (Where are they now all those who appear in these old images?) Too much chaos to distill reason.  A hundred reasons to decompose the Chaos.

  This piece of writing brought to the present the images of the past and old and current conflicts became intimately related. Thanks to this connection, questions essential to the day’s objectives were put on the table. For example, the images of the 1997 uprising in Cutral-Có, in the province of Neuquén, are closely linked to the forced disappearance of Santiago Maldonado, activist in favour of the Mapuche indigenous cause, in Neuquén, three weeks before the second workshop [4].
  
  In the quotation above, “too much chaos” refers to how the massive accumulation, disarray and overlapping of images made it difficult to analyze each one individually, being unable to rationalize what was being shown. Instead, a sensation won over, an emotional content that came through the images, creating the text almost without describing them. Participants remarked that the way the images were assembled forced the eye to go through them quickly. It was difficult to focus on the details of any one image. It was almost impossible to separate or isolate any one in order to analyze them. However, as those present said in this and other writings, there were images that seemed to emerge from the totality, to light up – and they were not the same ones for everyone. These images, in turn, connected with others creating bridges across non-juxtaposed spaces, “twisting” the temporal continuity that seemed to be determined by their spatial order. At the end of this exercise, reflections centered around expressing out loud why the gaze stayed around certain territories and inhabited them, and what calm – or otherwise, inquisitiveness – those images provided, especially as a refuge to the frantic rhythm of the bloc. What illuminated each image for each participant is related to how a link was established between them: it is the encounter with that which encourages us to continue our research.
  
  A second exercise proposed carrying the images from the first to a second table following some predetermined rules.  Silent exercise. A maximum of three people could stand up at once and choose one or several images at will. Then they had to place them on the second table and none could be completely hidden or totally visible. As in a drama exercise, everyone sat on chairs at a certain distance from the material. This forced participants to see themselves as an audience that observed - and that would also be defied to break the frame and take action from a strong exercise of the will, an encounter with their desire that could also be imposed on other participants’ space: pure group dynamics.
  
  
  
  The premise of this work put in evidence roles, tensions and sites of power that go beyond the remit of this writing. As coordinators we decided to take note of these dynamics but to not intervene in the actions that took place, even when some of these broke the proposed rules, because we believed that these breaches were manifestations that could be capitalized at a later analysis of the situation.At the end of the second exercise, participants said that composing a new order for the materials generated a different way of relating to the images: there was a clear intention, whether conscious or not, analytically arrived at or not, but where participants felt more involved. Individuals could speak about and give meaning to their choice of photographs from the pile of 100 images and also had to actively manage their link with them and with the composition that was gradually being generated.

  
  A third exercise proposed creating a sequential narrative with all the images: they had to form a timeline on the floor with a beginning and an end, but the shape was free. The sequence could be lineal, fragmented, chronological, dispersed, reasoned or none of these. Again, the team used their previous knowledge and experience of working with visual multimedia materials, in some cases, or their previous historical knowledge, in others.  Different roles and modes of participation developed.
  
  
  The narrative that emerged through the consensus of the team was a fictional recreation or construction – but based on reality – where one could find street children, a guerrilla hero, teachers demanding their rights as well as researchers. Other elements, especially those of a  more abstract nature, were allowed to play other roles: a photo cut in thin stripes and woven became the way media distort facts; another photograph cut by hand in many pieces, a crisis. As a result of the contributions of many voices, there developed a story of self-organization, of cycles filled with crises and the expansion and retreat of social protests.  A spiral tale that returns to the beginning at a different plane of the history of self-organization in general and of this story in particular.
  
  The available materials were completely used up in the narrative. There was a moment, however, when one of the participants separated all the photographs in which members of the team could be seen during the first workshop. This was not noticed by the group practically until the end of the exercise.  They then said:
   

  - We are missing
  (…)
  - How do we fit ourselves into this story?

  We take this as a clue to analyze how the team of researchers (that is how they define themselves) are involved in the narrative. It is pertinent to ask about the effect of taking their own photographed bodies out of the plane of production and if there were difficulties to integrate these images again. As researcher-participants in these workshops, this sequence “lit up” for us and we understand then that the link researcher-object is attractive for us to continue our inquiries.  In this sense, our artistic practices may seem to facilitate these journeys: they integrate multiple planes of thought and link spaces, forms and bodies.
  
  Remember, commemorate, testify.  Resist.
  The purpose of the two workshops was to reflect on some of the characteristics of self-organization as a socio-historical process. However, working from the materiality of the images and other media that participants shared allowed an exercise of collective memory that also became, in a way, a commemoration and an act of testifying.
   

  I believe photo elicitation mines deeper shafts into a different part of human consciousness than do words-alone interviews. It is partly due to how remembering is enlarged by photographs and partly due to the particular quality of the photograph itself. Photographs appear to capture the impossible: a person gone; an event past. That extraordinary sense of seeming to retrieve something that has disappeared belongs alone to the photograph, and it leads to deep and interesting talk (Harper, 2002:22-23).

  Alena Alexandrova (2014) critically examines Henri Lefebvre´s “The Missing Pieces”, a list containing poems, buildings, symphonies, works of art that are no longer in the world (and for which only remains the record that they once existed).  She describes it as an anarchic list without territorial or temporal context, but revealing what is not in it – the “saturated absences”. The work our group undertook during the first workshop can be described also as a list, where paths and narratives emerge allowing elements to be recovered and revealing those missing pieces still to be found. The empty space between images becomes a metaphor for those other invisible stories. 
  
  During the second workshop, those spaces became saturated with images echoing the first one. Images of the group working during the first session (taken out of the video as still frames and printed on paper) were included and allowed increased connections between several of these: when we see those images we find ourselves in them; we think about ourselves and rethink our history and our present.
  
  The construction of collective memory doesn’t amble down an easy path. As Walker (2017) claims in her work on the events of 11 September 2001 in the USA, personal memories are built over a collective memory already established of the events and in contrast with a great display in literature, the arts and theory produced in response to that which occurred. Although it’s not possible to create a total memory without falling into an eternal present where the horizon of culture is to just revive the past (Alexandrova, 2014), the exercise of memory must constitute a collective, conscious and reiterated action to stop history making it disappear. For Young (1999), the process of commemoration must remain incomplete to guarantee the life of memory: commemoration becomes a process and not an answer, a place where there is time for commemorative, contemplative reflection and learning. Similarly, these commemorative processes lay in direct dialogue with the possibility of building/re-building memory and, in case of traumatic events, re-signifying historical memory found in official or popular discourses.  A process of conscience-raising – of conscientious action - is necessary, however, to turn those new learning events into a materiality that can be apprehended and then shared. It is in this sharing and communicating to others that memory and commemoration may play a role to enact change. These acts where a person becomes a witness, where they testify, defy regimes of representation and create multiple spatial imaginaries (Cambre, 2014) where that given or accepted-as-truth until that very moment, can be questioned. This “embodied seeing” (embodied gaze) - becoming aware of something and acting upon it - transforms the onlooker into a witness. The witness becomes proof themselves of the evidence: what is outside becomes part of them – one becomes a witness by carrying the weight of the testimony - that is by bearing witness (Cambre, 2015).
  
  The methodology used during the two sessions encouraged the opening of physical and temporal spaces for the contemplation of what was exhibited, written, and spoken (that is, embodied). Memory took place in the encounter between the participant, the canvas and the mind/heart/conscience of the observers, and by multiplying those interactions in unanticipated and unexpected ways. During the workshops there was room for commemoration and remembrance and participants also became witnesses and embodied their seeing to give new meaning to the images that they worked with. The space of creation became then a space for resisting the way things are or the truth as it is framed. It was in the interaction that participants constructed alternative narratives and were able to articulate emerging discursive (and distinct) possibilities.  These artistic processes are in themselves counter-hegemonic and subversive because they question the notion of a single discourse, way of seeing, historical narrative or memory.
   
  Some methodological considerations
  In closing we identify three aspects that we consider key if this methodology were to be recreated somewhere else. The first one relates to context and research; the second one, to the way in which voice and action needs to be distributed equally amongst participants; the third and final one is about the way in which audiovisual records may support an analytical perspective afterwards.
  
  When facing work of this nature, the team, whether teachers or researchers, must keep in mind the local historical context and the type of representations about these stories/histories that are regularly reproduced in the media and institutions, as well as the existence of alternative narratives.
  
  The challenge is to disentangle those narratives through connecting and juxtaposing images in a process of collective creation.  Given that no image is better than any other one, each may open an interaction with participants that can not be foreseen.  This fact allows for a “leveling” process that puts the images and the team in parity with each other: participants are positioned in parity in regards to their perspective on any image, creating an even field of exchange as a starting point. Each opinion counts. No one´s response is better than anyone else's and questions can be posed equally in regards to any piece.
  
  However, in order to be able to identify how these processes take place, and be able to trace the exchange that emerges amongst participants, the images and other media, we need a record. Making an audiovisual record provided a document through which participants could revisit their work together. Coordinators were also able to look at what happened in order to later analyze key points.
  
  During our second workshop, a third person – that is, someone who was not a coordinator or participant – was in charge of recording with two hand-held cameras. There was also a zenithal camera to record the making of the collective collage.  These elements were essential at the time of analyzing gestures, narratives and discussions taking place during the day.
  
  Final reflections
  At the beginning of our writing, we posed an implicit question about the relationship between bodies, images and words, and we hypothesized that this encounter goes further than others that use lines of reasoning as the only type of exchange.
  
  Even though there have been recent experiences of work with images in Argentina [5], the methodology used during these workshops could represent a novelty in two ways: on the one hand, working with a set of multiple images and interviewees at the same time, and on the other, obtaining a set of information that arises from the process of collective construction that we consider interesting to analyze. The sequence of distinct voices and discourses, their relation and mutual affectation, finish by creating a collective narrative that is more than the sum of its parts.  At the same time, encouraging the interviewees to “play” with the images and to link them spatially allows more active and deeper channels of association, as well as engaging the group with the material perceived as a totality.
  
  In this multiple process the researchers also create, observe, observe themselves and interact among themselves and with the materials. They thus become witnesses-actors in their own production, allowing the heuristic to emerge from the material itself because it generates (at the same time as the work) a live and involved space of analysis.
  
  The actions that make up this process of creation-research can be analyzed, as well, from the point of view of the performance, given that those present have the possibility of making a conscious record of their own actions in a space that can be perceived as a mis-en-scène.  The methodology we used allows bodies, actions, spaces and speaking to disentangle meanings that could be exhausted or end up as a dead-end street if we only had engaged with reasoning.  It is from playing-action with the images that other discourses can be embodied and promote new ways of researching.
  
  It is in this sense that we define research as a process of learning with the explicit intention of remarking that exchange, or more precisely collective action, not only predisposes but also forces inter-disciplinary teams to put on the table the most basic ways in which they approach their disciplines.  Learning is, in this sense, renouncing the power that a specific knowledge of each field may provide.  Our place in a micro-world that exercises a mandate on the use of the word collapses when faced with the perspective of a healthier horizon: deepening our disciplines means opening them up to a field of relations from which to re-define them (Cosachov & Scolnik, 2008).
  
  Breaking down frontiers between disciplines is for us, as a team, a challenge to the way we see our own practice. In this sense, the canvas, the glued papers, the room, the time each action takes, the intervals contained in words and gestures, they all make up a complex map in which the form-time and form-space open up and connect in all directions. There is no order or border with enough permanence to frame discourses, nor central or predominant perspective when faced with a multiplicity of gazes and voices that meet, and where both are given equal value and the possibility of being heard.
  
  Equally, bodies as frames or borders are transformed like discourses into witnesses of other bodies and words that preceded them – these witnesses are able to think and act over the motivations that gave way to acts of resistance during the recent past. These bodies, together as a collective organism in motion, took the challenge to think about self-organization through recent history and about themselves as body-resistant to the actions of the State in cases of human rights violations and the politics of oppression.  During the workshops, the production of a group working in parity lit up the recovery of memory as a collective, active, creative process, in constant growth.
  
  In this sense we recognize Art – and its processes – as a subversive tool, which in essence defies the given order and makes evident that which is not allowed or is outside the norm.
