Biography:
The Freeman's Journal was the leading newspaper in Ireland from its start by Charles Lewis in 1763 until its incorporation into the Irish Independent in 1924. The paper was known to have a political voice throughout its history, often shifting with the tenure of its editors, until the paper's printing presses were destroyed by Anti-Treaty IRA soldiers, and it merged with the Independent. The weekend issue of the Journal was referred to as The Weekly Freeman.
