ECAR Study of Undergraduate Students and Information Technology 2013

By Rebecca Gould, Kansas State University

The ECAR Study, released in Oct, presents some interesting findings:
  • 2/3 of the students indicate that instructors use technology effectively.
  • The majority indicated that they do not skip class if the materials are posted online.
  • Basic technology resources, such as the institution’s website, the learning management system
and the library website are the “most pervasive and valued” and “used by nearly all students”
  • Students look to faculty and their use of technology to enhance their own skills (in courses not in separate digital literacy courses)
  • The preference of students is to separate their academic and social presence.
  • Laptops remain the technology tool preferred, however smartphones and tablets are beginning to invade this space.
The study, published each year since 2004, analyzed results of more than 100,000 students, 250 institutions, 47 states and 14 countries.
