The Church Addition

The architect hired to design the Saint Andrew Tower was Jim Strasman[1], he was chosen for his ability to combine the old and the new. Strasman’s perception of the architectural connection between the church and the office building was in par with the vision of the St. Andrew’s community, a modern complex inspired by classic architecture merging with the church.

The clients found for the addition were first the Bank of Canada and then the Department of Justice[2]. In order to accommodate the two clients additional modification were also made to the church. Those included reinforced structure and a secure underground tunnel for the needs of the Bank of Canada.

The final result was an 11 story addition connected to the church via a network of cooper tiles that slowly oxidized to match the other buildings around the Parliament[3]. To help making the transition more organic, a small garden was also added between the two buildings. The architecture of the addition is sometime criticized[4], however to the community and most people I had the chance to talk with during my visit, they consider it like something more than just a building. It is what saved their church and an important part of the Presbyterian community.

The distinction between the addition and the church is primarily based on the type of activities happening inside. The original church is mostly used for secular activities like the Sunday sermon, weddings, funerals and baptism, while the addition is used for community events like the bazaar, the alcoholic anonymous meetings and various events[5].
