Helpful Healing Handouts
Here we are looking at Allen's Root Beer Extract (girl with flowers) trade card. When looking at this trade card, the front of the trading card immediately jumps out at me. What sparks my interest is the young age of the child. This trade card is aimed at a younger audience. We can see the girl with a smile on her face roaming around happily surrounded by flowers.
The back of the trading card aims to establish health and convince us that root beer is not only delicious but 100 percent safe for everyone and children. The trade card aims to show how this product helps and aids with digestion and also allows the livers and kidneys to function at a healthy level too. Additional information about the price and what makes up the product is also on the back of the trading card.
This trade card is Carter's Little Liver Pills (girl +boy in blue). When observing this specific trade card, the contrast between the front and back stands out to me first. The front of the trading card involves much more imagery and color. We can see a young boy and girl surrounded by what seems to be in a garden. Flowers are a main part of the front of the image. The pills here are to help relieve headaches.
The back of the trade card describes what the pill is designed to do. It guarantees no failure and explains the price and dosage of what pill to take. I like this trade card's text and black and white colors. Everything is popping out, and the writing on the back is straightforward to read and pops out as you. The font and style of writing help with the advertisement as it makes it more appealing.
This last trade card is Boschee's German Syrup, August Flower, and Auge Conqueror. The trading card about german syrup. This trade card is similar to the others I studied in that children are at the front of the trading card. However, this time adults seem to be present too. It appears like a father and mother are out with their children.
The back of the trading card has many descriptions. The german syrup part is said to help relieve coughs and colds. It even helps with asthma and throat, lung, or chest pain. The back of the card explains how the german syrup comes from Germany, and it has yet to suffer a single failure in providing relief. The writing on the back of this trade card seems small, and I wouldn't say I like how too much information is present. Overall the front is cool, though, and has an excellent and unique long length. It also includes a lot of shades of colors on the front. Overall, It was a fantastic trade card to study and learn about.
Here is my cropped image of Boschee's German Syrup, August Flower, and Auge Conqueror. The idea is showing a father pointing to the trading card and showing it to his son. This excellent advertising technique shows the dad encouraging using this trade card. One thing that also stands out to me is the smile on the father's face. Another thing that stands out to me is the bright colors of this trade card. The father is dressed in red and has bright blue jeans on. This gives a happy feeling.
Throughout this quarter, I learned how to use comparative analysis when comparing trade cards extensively. It allowed me to analyze and focus on specific similarities and differences when reviewing the trade cards. Scholarly annotation was also crucial as it allowed me to learn how to incorporate particular ways on how to annotate something, like paying attention to the title description and relevance of the thing I was annotating on. Finally, learning how to develop a thesis or research question helped a ton as I could focus on goals and commonalities that specific items had and how to claim these things together. Overall, I enjoyed using these skills in my scalar project and connecting it to medicine. It was enjoyable, and I hope everyone learned a ton.
