About Pa Thor, Teaching Assistant to the Course

Smiley face

Hello! My name is Pa Thor and I am a 3rd year Ph.D. candidate at Silver. Yes, you read that correct, Thor, as in the God of Thunder, Thor (I get that a lot). I am originally from California, where I attended the University of California, Merced for my undergraduate degree and California State University, Stanislaus for my MSW degree. My primary area of focus during my MSW education was child welfare. Following my MSW, I worked in child protective services (ACS as it is known in NYC) for three years as an emergency response social worker. Currently, my areas of research include gender-based violence, family violence and relationships, gun violence, community-based interventions, ethnic minorities, marginalized and vulnerable populations. Most of my research interests are influenced by my previous work, community service, and my ethnic background of being Hmong myself. My dissertation seeks to understand Hmong murder-suicides by exploring the microlevel and macrolevel (cultural) factors associated with these acts of violence. I look forward to getting to know everyone!
