Grading Scheme
In this course I will be using a modification of approach sometimes referred to as Specifications Grading. Depending on the assignment grading will be either Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory S/U, on a scale from 0-4 on the Sample Scale, or 0-4 on the Assessment/Grading Scale on Hypothes.is Annotations "AGHA" Scale for short.
To summarize:Team exercises and assignments are not graded or peer graded when appropriate.
Minimum requirements to earn a B or B+
- Active participation and contributions to the learning community: To earn a grade in the B range, you have to meet the stated standards/qualities for required individual assignments with Ss or a minimum average of 3 on Sample’s scale, depending on the type of assignment. Students can resubmit if something falls below the standard. I will indicate when an assignment will be graded S/U or on the Sample or AGHA scale. Team assignments are not graded.
- Students who successfully complete all the tweeting, annotations, and individual and team assignments will earn a final grade of B or B+ (with B+ indicative of the extra value you have added to our learning in the course).
One advantage to having this optional project is that it allows you to decide how much you feel able to handle in the semester. I have no expectations that students should do a project. I’m fully aware of how much stress students may be under, and see it as a sign of self-awareness and self care when a student chooses not to do it. This system gives you the student full control over which of these levels you will strive to accomplish, based on your own learning priorities and self-aware judgment over time-management and intellectual goals.
I do not penalize for missed due dates but urge students to let me know when they are slipping behind so I can assist. Slack or email me in advance if you are unable to prepare an assignment by the due date.
You can expect to spend a minimum of about 5 hours of reading/watching videos/listenings per week. As the class progresses you will be expected to locate and add your own recommendations for readings for the class, and to give the reason for your recommendation. Remember it does not have to be a source you agree with. The hashtag for the class is #swpp2nyu. Always use this tag for Tweets related to the class and those you want classmates to see. If you are concerned about your ability to meet the work expectations of this class (due to outside obligations of work and/or family) or about how your final grade might affect your financial aid please make an appointment to see me at the beginning of the course or as soon as possible.
