African Americans in the Spanish Civil War

Throughout the history of the United States, the African American people have not been treated with the same rights and respect as the white man. This would all begin to change. Since the establishment of the United States, African American have participated in small activism acts to bring about change. What is that Change? That all men are created equal. Just like the constitution says. One means of activism for African American, was the Spanish Civil war, taking place from the years 1936 to 1939. The civil war in Spain, which sides were Franco and allies fighting for fascism, against the native citizens Spanish republic, was an opportunity African American saw as important to their own wars at home.

This exhibit will attempt to show the beginning history of why African American thought fighting, in a foreign war, would be a good idea. Towards the middle of the Exbibit, it will lay out the history of African American throughout the fighting, of the Spanish Civil War. Most of that will cover the years between 1937, which is the year the first men and women would set foot in Spain, and 1939, which is the year the war in Spain ended. At the end, the Exbibit will show he history of the effects of the Spanish Civil on the African American people, as they return back home to the United States.
