Presence

pres·ence  [prez-uh ns]  Show IPA
noun
1.
the state or fact of being present, as with others or in aplace.

People will often say that someone or something has a 'strong presence'. By this they could be referring to an influential organisation, if a business has a large market share it may be described as having a 'strong presence' during a business meeting. Perhaps it was used as a euphemism for someone who just a tad too loud, or maybe too loudly dressed.

The term presence can also be used in the paranormal or spiritual sense, to refer to anything that is not physically present but is felt, such as a ghost, spirit or holy entity.

We can also consider the use of the term 'presence' in the dea of having a stage presence. I am most drawn to this use of the word due to studying of Bill T. Jones in class. Asin his projects it is not him but virtual images the importnat question of identity is brought up. As we cannot see that it is Jones, many even had trouble recognising the figures as fully human a presence that is the shadow of Jones is created as he attempts to separate identity from movement.
