1906 Atlanta Riot


The 1906 gubernatorial race   was one particularly built on inflaming the racial passions of the voters.  Each candidate tried to out do the other in promising to promote white supremacy.  This agitation finally broke out the weekend of September 22-25 into a riot in which roving white mobs attacked African Americans and their houses. Twenty-five to forty African Americans were killed as were two whites.  As a result blacks after the riot concentrated in areas around Atlanta University and in the eastern section of town.  It became a touchstone for national conversations about race and African Americans.
