The Jewish Federation Council’s 1968 population study found that the Los Angeles Jewish community was, on aggregate, experiencing new levels of affluence. Even so,the Jewish community was simultaneously contending with intensified socio-economic divisions; these conditions were especially apparent in Beverly-Fairfax as better-off (and younger) residents increasingly migrated towards more affluent communities on the Westside and in the San Fernando Valley. Those who stayed within the Fairfax neighborhood — often because they lacked the means to uproot themselves and move elsewhere — were poorer than the city’s Jewish population at large.
