Cultural Linguistics

When extensively reviewing the Japanese and English scripts of Chrono Trigger, it is easy to see the unique characteristics of each rendition. Cultural norms colored these distinct localizations, influencing their jokes, expressions, and references. At the same time, much contextual information was lost in translation from Japanese to English mainly as a direct cause of Japanese characters containing more meaning than English equivalents (which had to be cut down due to the limited storage capacity of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System). By examining these culturally-specific instances, revelations concerning the true nature of localization will be acknowledged, further enlightening our notions of what happened as Japanese culture was articulated to North American gaming audiences.
