In California, segregation affected many school children. African Americans, Mexican Americans, Asian Americans, and Native Americans were some groups who were kept segregated and were discriminated against. In California, because of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, it was illegal for Mexican students to be segregated. However, many people did not follow the law. In San Bernardino County, Mexican and Mexican-American children were not allowed to attend schools with white students.
