Remember the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, 1848

We learned about this treaty in Unit 3, pg. 86. This treaty ended the Mexican-American War and gave new territories, including California, to the United States. When Mexico gave up their territories they wrote that in these new areas Mexicans should not be discriminated against.

Segregation in California Segregation is the practice of keeping people of different races, religions, and genders separate from each other. In California, segregation affected many school children. African Americans, Mexican Americans, Asian Americans, and Native Americans were some groups who were kept segregated and were discriminated against. In California, because of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, it was illegal for Mexican students to be segregated. However, many people did not follow the law. In San Bernardino County, Mexican and Mexican-American children were not allowed to attend schools with white students.
