Although the rules had changed, many of the Mexican American students were bullied because the other students believed in stereotypes. Fred Ramos was a student at Mission School and remembers the many insults aimed at the new students’ hygiene. Ramos remembers the bullies stating “Wash your hands. How come you are brown?” and “You Mexican kids go back to where you came from.” These statements made the new students feel unwelcome. Although the transition was very difficult Mission School provided the Mexican American students with a better education. The work of Rey, Cruz, and Davis led to the diversity we have at Bryn Mawr Elementary today.
