Transgender Rights in Higher Education

Learning From Best Practices

Campus Pride
In addition to looking at policy recommendations and student experiences, it is also useful to look at examples of trans-friendly colleges and universities to understand some of the practices that have helped them create more inclusive environments. Although many still offer little or no support to trans students, there is a small but growing number of colleges and universities that are beginning to consider the needs of this segment of the higher education community and others that are already leading the way toward greater transgender inclusiveness. The website Campus Pride is a resource and advocacy organization aimed at supporting the LGBTQ community in higher education. The Campus Pride's Founder & Executive Director, Shane Windmeyer, discusses the best resources available out there in terms of specific best policies and practices for transgender students.

Friendliest Campuses
The website Campus Pride is a resource and advocacy organization aimed at supporting the LGBTQ community in higher education. It has devised the LGBTQ Campus Climate Index which has been published since 2001 in order to determine how LGBTQ-friendly an institution is. Through this rating system, the organization created a top 10 trans-friendly colleges and universities list (as depicted in the map below).

In a more recent report (dated May 2015), College Magazine released its own top 10 transgender-friendly campuses list with some additional institutions which were not on the Campus Pride list. These include: Hampshire College, Augsburg College, University of Arizona, University of Maine, Case Western Reserve University, and California Polytechnic State University. These 16 college and universities meet or surpass most of the standard recommendations set out by LGBTQ groups for transgender inclusiveness. But there are many more examples of ongoing policies and efforts that have been implemented in these institutions, including our home institution, which are detailed in the contents below.
