Jazz at the Philharmonic (JATP) was a series of concerts organized by Norman Granz that originally took place in Los Angeles. The series began in 1944 and occurred monthly. The JATP name was used for concerts that took place in various cities and by the 1950s, a typical tour lasted between six to eight weeks and included about 40 to 60 performances in the U.S. and Canada. Some famous names that appeared in the concerts were Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, Roy Eldridge, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Coleman Hawkins and Gene Krupa, among many others. Granz assembled these players to play jazz standards in an ad hoc manner and there were even informal “battles” between trumpeters and saxophonists.
