The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood: Thinking Historically About Artistic Movements

Painting Analysis

The first work of Millais' that was considered “Pre-Raphaelite” was Isabella, a painting created during the early years of his career when the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood had just been formed. The base of the bench on which Isabella sits has a carving depicting a kneeling figure under which appear the letters PRB which stand for Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. This painting was the first to incorporate the Pre-Raphaelite initials.

Observe Millais’ painting Isabella for 1-3 minutes and write down your initial observations. Note any characteristics, details, or questions.
After observing for the allotted time, discuss your findings with your fellow classmates. What did you notice? Are there patterns between your observations? What did you like or not like about this painting?
