Biography & Early Life
"It doesn't matter how beautifully a thing is painted, it is no good if it isn't right - it's got to come out... What does it matter how you do it? Paint it with a shovel if you can't get your effect any other way."
- John Everett Millais in a letter to a friend
Born: 1829 in Southampton, England
Died: 1896 in Kensington, England
Education: Sass’s Art School, Royal Academy Schools
Spouse: Effie Chalmers
Even in his early years, John Everett Millais was considered an art prodigy and would often be found drawing figures, birds, and butterflies. His talent was carefully cultivated by his parents who sent him to be taught by several masters, but eventually could not be taught anything more by them. He was then sent to be educated in London where he would go on to win various medals for his work. Accepted to the Royal Academy at the age of 10, Millais became the youngest to ever attend the Academy. It was at the Royal Academy that Millais met William Holman Hunt where they soon became fast friends who bonded over their dissatisfaction with the art education of that time. He, along with his fellow Brotherhood members, would suffer censure and inspire a whole generation of future artists.
