He opened the Hancock College of Aeronautics in Santa Maria, California in 1928. Its original purpose was to train pilots to support the burgeoning aviation industry, and in 1939, it began to train pilots for the Air Force.
Hancock's operations in Santa Maria also provided support for the construction of early benthoscopes, in use by scientists aboard the Velero IV.
