  Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Highlight the bracketed number in the text.
  
  2. Click Mark Phrase (the pen icon in the top toolbar). Then select General, and then select ref. The bracketed number is now marked with a ref element.
  3. Scroll down to the corresponding endnote and click the p tag containing the note to select it.
  
  4. ​​​​​In the Element Inspector for the selected p tag, type an ID into the xml:id field. The ID should be formatted as note-number; for example, “note-1” or “note-2”. Click the checkmark icon to confirm the ID.
  5. Highlight the bracketed number [1] in the endnote. Click Mark Phrase (the pen icon in the top toolbar). Then select General, and then select ref (see image above in Step 2). The bracketed number is now also marked with a ref element so that it can point back to the reference point in the text.
  
  6. Scroll up to the reference point in the text and click the p tag containing the paragraph in which the note reference appears.
  
  7. In the Element Inspector for the selected p tag, type an ID into the xml:id field. The ID should be formatted as note-number-back; for example, “note-1-back” or “note-2-back”. Click the checkmark icon to confirm the ID.
  
  8. Click the bracketed number in the text to open the Element Inspector for the ref element you created in Step 2.
  
  Clicking the target field will show all target IDs you have created in the document. Select the corresponding ID (#note-1).
  
  Now, readers can click the bracketed number and be taken to the endnote.
  
  9. ​​​​​Scroll down to the corresponding endnote and click the bracketed number in the endnote to open the Element Inspector for the ref element you created in Step 5.
  
  Clicking the target field will show all target IDs you have created in the document. Select the corresponding ID (#note-1-back). 
  
  Now, readers can click the bracketed number and be taken back to the reference point in the text.
  
  10. Repeat steps 1-9 for every reference in the document.
