  Bold, Italics, & Underline

  Simple formatting like adding bold, italics, or underline can be done using the shortcut buttons on the top toolbar. Highlight the text you want to format and click the appropriate button.

  Using the Mark Phrase Icon and Rend Values

  You can also format text by highlighting it, clicking the Mark Phrase icon, then clicking General, and then hi. Type “bold” “italic” or “underline” (or a combination of these) into the rend field in the Element Inspector.
  
  Some texts use “small caps” for names or for the first word(s) of a chapter. To format text as “small,” highlight the text, click the Mark Phrase icon, then click General, then hi. Type “small” into the rend field in the Element Inspector.

  Rend Values for Basic Inline Text Formatting

  Multiple rend values can be used together. Separate them with a single space.
  
  The following rend values may be entered to modify text marked with a hi element:
  • bold
  • italic
  • underline
  • small
  • medium
  • large
  • uppercase
  • line-through
  • red
  • orange
  • green
  • blue
  • purple
  • brown
  • gray

  Line Breaks

  Use line break (lb) elements to break text in a single p element into multiple lines.
  
  To insert a lb element, click the Insert Inline icon on the top toolbar, then select Breaks, then lb.
  lb elements appear as guillemets (a pair of sideways chevrons) in the editing panel:
  The text will display on three separate lines, as shown below.
  Notice that when separate p elements are used to break text into separate lines, there is more white space between the lines than when a lb element is used. Use lb elements like this sparingly, and only to replicate a text's original formatting when the formatting carries meaning. For example, see Formatting Title Pages.
   

  Horizontal Line Dividers

  To insert a horizontal line divider, first insert a lb element. Then click the element to open the element inspector, and enter the rend value "horizontal-rule".
  The horizontal rules will look like this in the preview window:
  The width of horizontal rule dividers can be modified by entering a style code for modified margins as a rend value for the structural element (e.g., a p element) containing the lb element.
