This example shows the "progress of the nation" in a series of four maps that document the population growth in 10-year stages from 1790 onward. The population densities of the inhabited territories (excluding indigenous peoples as they were not taken into account in the censuses) were broken down into five classes. In addition the authors made great efforts to calculate the respective geographic "Centre of Population," evidently because this concept played an important role in the public debates of the time.
