  Technology

  Sample-based synthesizers imitate the sounds of real instruments by playing back recorded audio files at different frequencies.

  Subtractive 

  Some sample-based synthesizers process recorded waveforms using the same principles exhibited in subtractive analog synthesis.  These synthesizers replace the oscillator or attack transients with recorded waveforms.
