Chapter III: Sample-based Synthesis

Technology

Sample-based synthesizers imitate the sounds of real instruments by playing back recorded audio files at different frequencies.

Subtractive

Some sample-based synthesizers process recorded waveforms using the same principles exhibited in subtractive analog synthesis.  These synthesizers replace the oscillator or attack transients with recorded waveforms.

Multisample

Other samplers use layers of different audio recordings of the same instrument to more realistically recreate the sound of other instruments.
