Ludlow Massacre
It is said that the Ludlow Massacre was one of the most violent industrial labor strikes in American History. In the year of 1914 an attack was planned by striker organizations killing numerous workers, two women and eleven children. The catastrophe threatened to completely undermine the entire structure of the mill and mine structure in Southern Colorado. Realizing the importance to get the workers back on their side, Rockefeller and CF&I management focused all their efforts on wholesome, clean, recreational activities for CF&I laborers and their families. Rockefeller who was blamed for the happening of the Ludlow Massacre used the Y as an ideal solution to improving the morale and infrastructure of the mill as well as his personal image. Rockefeller commissioned the Steel Works Y in 1917 for more than $400,000; the equivalent of more than $9 million dollars today.
