Compared to the past, the modern burlesque performer will do it for fun, rather than money. Often they will spend more money on their costumes and building their show than they are paid to do it. Their purpose is no longer for the sexual gratification of men, but self-expression, owning their sexuality, to challenge sexual objectification, orientation and social norms. The new burlesque is not only for women either, but is open to all individuals of varying gender, race, sexuality, and body type. Drag King and Queens feature in many shows, and boylesque has a place as well, featuring the male striptease. Burlesque is now a form of entertainment that can be enjoyed by all. Performances and competitions can be found at both large and small venues, in an array of forms. There is even a Burlesque Hall of Fame located in Las Vegas. No one is left behind in neo-burlesque, and reasons for performing may vary, but this new burlesque is full of empowerment.
