Wilcox Scrapbook

Mary Emmons Hogan Wilcox was a student at Saint Mary’s College from 1924-1928. She came from the Chicago area and left her mark on Saint Mary’s College through her personal suede, Chicago-manufactured scrapbook. The cover reads “Crux Spes Unica,” the motto of The Congregation of The Holy Cross, and the motto of Saint Mary’s College. The scrapbook overflows with dance cards, pictures with friends, letters, pamphlets, greeting cards, telegrams, newspaper clippings, and other multimedia artifacts.

It is clear from these artifacts that she had a tight bond to the Notre Dame community, wore modest clothing, and enjoyed taking many fun and goofy pictures, many of which offered poignant depictions of student life in the past. Students in our class found ourselves drawn to Mary’s scrapbook due to the recognizable places around Saint Mary’s College that she documents in her book. The historical context of our college can be felt not only through her documentation but through the condition of the scrapbook itself. The residue, tears, and jumbled artifacts made us notice the continual passing of time. While the binding of the book is broken, the memories of Mary Emmons Hogan Wilcox will continue to live on in the Saint Mary’s College Archives for future generations of Saint Mary’s College students to encounter.
