Agency, Voice, and the Evolution (AVE) of Women at Saint Mary’s, 1920-2023: Spring 2023

1970s History

Students at Saint Mary's College in the early 1970s came of age during the Civil Rights movement and the Vietnam War. It was an era of social and political upheaval that opened the doors to new possibilities for women and African Americans, even as it was also marred by political violence and continued racism and sexism in many areas of the social landscape. Saint Mary's College's very existence was even tested during this period, as the role of women's colleges in the educational landscape was increasingly questioned and the possibility to joining with the University of Notre Dame to create a new, co-educational institution was supported by many students, alumanae, and parents.
