Agency, Voice, and the Evolution (AVE) of Women at Saint Mary’s, 1920-2023: Spring 2023

General History

Saint Mary’s College was established on land previously owned by both the Potawatomi Tribe and the Miami Tribe. In the 1840s, the time of Saint Mary's College’s founding, Leopold Pokagon was the leader of a tribe of Potawatomi. This particular tribe, which had contact with both campuses, refers to themselves as the Pokagon Potawatomi. Saint Mary’s College created a land acknowledgment which recognizes the rich indigenous heritage of its land.

Saint Mary’s College Land Acknowledgement

We wish to acknowledge and honor the Native people and their traditional homelands on which we stand. We particularly recognize the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi and the Miami, who have been utilizing this land and its resources for many years and continue to do so today. With deep gratitude we acknowledge the Native people and their culture within our community as well as acknowledging the land upon which we gather, pray, learn and work” (“Saint Mary’s”).
