Teaching notes 27 August 2014
For the first day of class, I asked students to comment on the syllabus that I posted on Google Docs through Carmen, but I haven't found anything yet.
But what followed was my general overview of the Miltonic tradition, which is the substance of this class.
Then I finished the class by undercutting this argument. I pointed out the fact that this history is comprised entirely of dead white males. I pointed out that there are many other branching paths within this tradition, and that there are archives of poetry completely unaddressed by this tradition.

So I asked students about how poetry was part of their own lives, and I was stunned by what I heard. There are published poets in my class, poets with spoken word and hip-hop backgrounds, and even opera singers with backgrounds in German, French, and Italian poetry.
In closing, I asked students to send me a 500 word response to three questions:
1. What is your past experience with English poetry?
2. What are your goals for this class?
3. What is an unexpected success from your personal life?
As always, I found these responses very revealing and refreshing.
