“I have been an artist all of my life, but I really wanted to be Margaret Mead. Can I use that as an explanation for all these allusion to folk art that have crept into my work? I would prefer to parallel my idol’s powers of analysis and her warm wisdom, but it seems the best I can do is to fill up rooms with these bright colors and bold patterns. To enliven and enhance the environment is one of the tasks tradition has assigned to women; I accept it wholeheartedly, mindful that it is only one of the things that art can do.”
