Artist Statement:
"When I was a freshman in high school, I was introduced to the potter’s wheel. I made my first vase, and a few years later, I remembered that little vase as I began to make thinner and larger bowls, cups and mugs in high school and throughout college. After attending my first conference by the National Council for the Education of the Ceramic Arts, I became less focused on the function of my pottery and turned my attention to content. The Women’s Art Institute [at St. Catherine University] gave me space to work completely sculpturally and think especially about the formal design qualities of my ceramic sculptures. I was fully exploring surface, material and processes as well as the spaces I live in and create.
Nest is about the community and space I surround myself with, especially my clay community. The branches are raku fired, a type of firing that requires many hands. As a recent college graduate, I am making my way and making my own nest.”
