The Life of St. Ignatius

In The Life of St. Ignatius (1686), French Jesuit priest and essayist Dominique Bouhours (1628-1702) argues against the understanding of Prester John as the Ethiopian negus, asserting that Prester John was instead "a Title Anciently us'd by the monarchs of the Asian Tartars" (qtd. in Brewer, p. 295).
